Karim Rashid
Karim Rashid is an industrial designer born in Egypt and raised in Canada. He designs luxury goods, furniture, lighting, surface design, brand identity and packaging. Time magazine named him the most celebrated industrial designer in all of America. He has worked in New York, Belgrade, Miami, Mexico and has worked in over 35 countries to date. Rashid earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1982 and completed post-graduate studies in design in Naples, Italy with Ettore Sottsass. He then moved to Milan for a year and worked in the studio of Rodolfo Bonetto. After this experience, Rashid worked for seven years at KAN Industrial Designers, a Canadian studio, creating X-ray equipment. From 1985 to 1991 he co-founded and designed the fashion collections Babel and North. In 1993, Rashid opened his own private design studio in New York City.
Rashid's work is represented in 20 permanent collections in museums around the world, including MoMA, Centre Pompidou and SFMOMA. His designs include the Umbra Garbo trash can, the Umbra Oh Chair, a concept store for Giorgio Armani, as well as the unique PAL collection for Vondom and the BLOSS sofas for Slide. He has also collaborated with Audi, Samsung, Swarowski and Armani. In addition, Rashid has also designed for Kenzo, Method, Bombay Saffire, Finé Water Japan and many more.
